THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR by William Shakespeare at the NERVI PARKS After the destruction of the war, some intellectuals thought of relaunching theatre in a city that was laboriously trying to resume a normal life. Since there were no longer buildings suitable for the purpose (the major theatres had been destroyed), the president of the Nervi Tourist Board, Ariodante Borrelli, undertook to organize an open-air show of great prestige in the splendid green setting of the Nervi Parks, in a theatre capable of seating two thousand people. Thus began the "Mediterranean Season of Art and Culture" with the “Merry Wives of Windsor”, a work rich in humour, beloved by audiences worldwide even if often snubbed by critics. The season ran from 9 to 17 July 1949 and was a great success. The director was Alessandro Fersen, who had already worked in theatre in Italy, France and Poland and who, during the war in Switzerland, had worked together with Emanuele Luzzati. The actors were partly already well known, others would become famous within a few years: Andreina Pagnani, Paola Borboni, Anna Proclemer, Marina Bonfigli, Camillo Pilotto, Luigi Almirante, Enrico Viarisio, Giancarlo Sbragia, Gianrico Tedeschi, Ferruccio De Ceresa, Luciano Salce and others.
