Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway (1899–1961), Hemingway with his fourth wife Mary Welsh stayed in Nervi at least twice and possibly three times. In 1949, having left the Ritz in Paris on Christmas Day, the Hemingways traveled through southern France to reach the in Nervi where they spent New Year's Eve. On January 2 and 3, 1950, the writer was already in Cortina, where he wrote letters to A.E. Hotchner, Charles Scribner, and Otto and Betty Bruce. On March 7, 1950, they left Venice for Paris. On March 21, they sailed from Le Havre on the transatlantic liner "Ile de France". As for the (possibly) earlier stay in 1948, there exists an autograph letter from Mary Hemingway dated November 25, 1948, written from Nervi. It is certain that on the afternoon of June 5, 1954, Hemingway arrived in Genoa from Nice, personally driving a Lancia Aurelia with his wife and secretary. He stayed, as usual, at the Hotel Savoia Beeler in Nervi, awaiting embarkation on the ship "Morosini" bound for Cuba. Here, at the Hotel Savoia, he met for the last time Adriana Ivancich, the great love of his life who inspired the character of Renata in the novel "Across the River and into the Trees", and then, after the brief stop, he embarked on June 6.
