The rose garden

The famous rose garden lies east of the romantic park of Villa Grimaldi. It was created in 1981 on the initiative of Dr Luigi Viacava, then director of the Genoa municipal Gardens and Forestry Service. It originally hosted at least 800 varieties of roses; over the years their number fell to about one third.

From 1985 the garden hosted the International Reblooming Rose Competition, also known as the Premio Genova, for many years. The competition was held in the last week of September and assessed roses cultivated for at least two years by a permanent jury. Entries included hybrid teas, floribundas and climbing roses, judged for both continuous flowering and the beauty of their blooms.
