Capolungo

Capolungo is the easternmost part of Genoa, bordering the municipality of Bogliasco. It is also known as Sant'Ilario al Mare. Together with the upper area, it was part of the former municipality of S. Ilario Ligure, which joined Genoa in 1926. In this part of Nervi, until the early 1960s, there were numerous hotels and guesthouses, most of which have now disappeared. Capolungo's golden age was around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, when many visitors came from the most distant countries of Europe and beyond. Among the most famous hotels were the Hotel Eden, one of the finest hotels in the entire Mediterranean, now converted into a residence, and the Pension Russe, famous for the countless illustrious guests who came here from Russia before the revolution to treat the dreaded consumption. The S. Ilario Ligure station, well known from Fabrizio De André's song "Bocca di Rosa", recently had a commemorative plaque placed there. In the seaside area, where the Anita Garibaldi promenade ends, lies the Marina di Capolungo, a picturesque bay inhabited by the last fishermen of the area. The Capolungo area also houses Villa Luxoro and its museum.
